From Michigan Radio: A Detroit slideshow
One thing that strikes our Detroit Journalism Cooperative partner Michigan Radio about Detroit – as the city teetered on the brink of insolvency, then entered Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection, and finally, last week, officially emerged from bankruptcy – is that life in the Motor City goes on. So producers asked photographer Ali Lapetina to take her camera all over the city in a single day, and shoot pictures from before sunrise until after sunset. What she captured is exactly that: the life that keeps beating in Michigan’s oldest and biggest and most complicated city.

On Michigan Radio: As Orr goes, where will Detroit head?
Appearing on Michigan Radio’s Stateside program, Detroit News business columnist Daniel Howes characterizes Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr’s tenure, saying he was “judicious” in using the power he had under Michigan law. Lessenberry Says: Widen Detroit’s freeways
“Emotionally, it is easy to agree to be aghast at the thought of turning even more land into concrete ribbons. Paving over paradise. as Joni Mitchell might have sung. Here’s how the proposal is linked to Detroit’s post-bankruptcy recovery.

On Michigan Radio: The fate of the Citizens District Councils
Detroit residents are determining how to move forward after the elimination of Citizens District Councils (CDCs). CDCs have been around since the Blighted Area Rehabilitation Act of 1945 granted Michigan cities the right to acquire blighted properties using the power of eminent domain. But last month—in one of his final acts as the city’s fully-empowered emergency manager–Kevyn Orr issued an order abolishing CDCs in Detroit. The move came as a surprise to many and provoked mixed reactions from people involved in community-based development in Detroit. Our Detroit Journalism Cooperative Partner Michigan Radio has this report.

On Michigan Radio: The art of appraising
All through the Detroit bankruptcy trial, the spotlight has been fixed on the Detroit Institute of Arts, as the appraisals of the museum’s collection have been wildly different. Beverly Jacoby is a noted art valuation expert and founder and president of BSJ Fine Art in New York. She spoke with our Detroit Journalism Cooperative partner Michigan Radio about why there are wildly different values assigned to the art.
Jacoby says there are several reasons for the wildly different values.
