  • Higher Parking Fees = Detroit Revenue

At $1 per hour, downtown Detroit’s parking meters are a bargain compared to other big cities, as are its fines for expired meters. That could change as part of the city’s restructuring. Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr is contemplating raising fees and transferring the Municipal Parking department to a private firm, The Detroit News reports.

The recommendations, which would bump the current parking fines of $20, $30 and $100 per ticket to a two-tiered structure of $45 and $150, are among the revenue-generating strategies recommended by Detroit’s restructuring consultants. … The city is paying $32 to issue and process a $30 parking violation, and it hasn’t adjusted rates since 2001.

In addition, three or more unpaid tickets could prevent drivers from renewing their licenses.
